done.

sorry for the delayed entry, it's been more than a bit nutty since Tahoe. Good news is we all made it, it was a beautiful day and we raised over $660,000. Did I mention that it was the most difficult ride I have ever done? I'll post some more pics and details soon, but first I have one more Montauk century to do this Saturday. Susan, my mentee, has recovered from the nasty header she took during our paceline clinic. I'll be riding the century (along with coach Matt) at her side. Stay tuned...

warm weather is here...

it's mid-April and the team is putting in some big miles these days. 35+ on our weekday practices and 50+ (with BIG hill climbing) on the weekends. With all the rain we experienced this Spring we have some making-up to do...

I've just blown past $3,600 for my own fundraising (which is pretty awesome!!), but the bigger news is that the team has already raised a whopping $440,000! That is incredible. Kudos to all the athletes who have helped raised such a staggering total - and we're not finished yet...

A quick glance at the calendar tells us that the Montauk century is a scant 3.5 weeks away... no route map yet but I'll post something as soon as I have it. I'm looking forward to riding for a local crowd this time around - it will be a chance to let everyone come out and cheer (without needing to arrange plane-fare).

stay tuned...

Happy April!

welcome to April - but let's not forget March. Sure, it rained a lot here in NY, and it was cold, but hey! We raised over $2,500 in March! March rocks.

thanks to everyone who has contributed so far. Montauk is only 7 weeks away. Tahoe is 9. I need to get back on that bike if I'm going to make it...

thanks again,

Walter

putting up some miles

It was a beautiful blue sky morning for our second Central Park training day (that's because the photos don't show the 30ยบ chill or the 20mph head wind..). Who cares, we were outside! 40 miles today preparing for a 50 mile ride next week up to Piermont. Mmmmm, Runcible Spoon. Thanks to Maureen for providing not one but TWO flats today - the break was appreciated  :)

Spring!

well, sorta. Today marked the Team's first outdoor training session - a multi-loop morning in Central Park. Blues skies, but COLD and WINDY. We broke the team into 3 skills groups, and I rode with the intermediate bunch. Nice to see the team all together - with spin classes we were always divided into groups of 20 or so. We did 3 loops, which equaled 19.5 miles, and since I rode to the park & back my total mileage came in at just around 40.
Now, if it would just warm up a little...

a day off

The Team took a day off of training today to do a few more important things. First was a fitness and nutrition clinic held by a couple of my ex-teammates, Amie and Josh. We tend to focus on the cycling part of this, but it's proper nutrition, stretching and balanced exercise that we'll need to get to the finish. At mile 80 your legs may still have juice, but if the rest of your body isn't in agreement you won't be going anywhere...

Welcome to the tools of the trade. Without all these powders, gels and bars it's near impossible to keep your body going for as long as we'll need. Learning how to use all this is an education in itself. Plus, it's not cheap...Big Thanks to Amie for getting all this donated to the team. It will allow new athletes the chance to try out different options to see what works for them, BEFORE spending the bucks!

Next we walked as a team to Connection to the Cause. Held at PS191 on the west side, it was an opportunity to meet many of the Honored Teammates for this season - folks who are battling the cancers we are raising funds to combat. Sometimes you need a reminder of why you committed yourself to this in the first place. (sorry for the crappy photo...)

Finally, barring bad weather next Saturday will be our first on-the-road training day!

say hi to Elaine...

this is Elaine Bolognese. She is the aunt of our friend Jeanne. Elaine found out just last week that she has been diagnosed with Lymphoma. Elaine, I am adding your name to Team NYC's list of Honored Teammates, and we will be riding this season in your name.

Big day! Thanks to Robi at Elegant Home - my first official donor for the 2008 season. And with that, we're on our way...

Welcome Back!

ok, details. Turns out I'm Mentoring for the Spring season. That means that we'll be training a COMBINED group of about 100 determined folks, and we'll be training for TWO differnt centuries. Wait - here's the best part. As a mentor I'll be riding BOTH events. That means 2 centuries with 2 weeks of each other. Nice :)

Now, if i didn't need a reason for that new bike before....
